On the home screen, press and hold the small lock at the top right for 3 seconds, then answer the times-table question. A quick tap does nothing, so little ones won't get in by accident. On the Parents page you can change your child's age and your class's sound order, mark this week's class sounds, see progress, turn Bear's voice on or off, and unlock or restore the full version.

• 1–2: listening games only — no letters yet.
• 3: letter sounds, tracing and picture games, then a book page.
• 4: sounds plus blending sounds into words.
• 5: blending and spelling with letter tiles.

You can change it at any time; progress is kept.

Schools teach the letter sounds in different orders. Both common orders start with s, a, t, i, p, n. Pick the one your child's class uses so Bear teaches the same sounds at home. Not sure? Leave it — you can ask the teacher and change it later.

Unlock everything adds all 44 sounds of English, blending and spelling, all 30 bedtime books, and every new sound and book we add later. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it works with Family Sharing.

Sign in with the same Apple ID you bought it with, open the Parents page (hold the lock for 3 seconds, then answer the question) and tap Restore purchases. With Family Sharing, family members can restore it the same way with their own Apple ID.

With Ask to Buy, the request goes to your family organiser to approve. Once it's approved, Bear Phonics unlocks automatically — there's nothing else to do.

On a sound card, your child can tap the microphone to hear themselves say the sound. The recording stays on the device, plays back once and is deleted straight away. To turn it off, go to Settings → Bear Phonics → Microphone.

• Turn the volume up, and check Bear's voice is on in the Parents page.
• If headphones or a speaker are connected, check the sound is going there.
